While the traditional lecture encourages the students to absorb and apply principles simultaneously, it is not an effective method of learning. By contrast, appropriate teaching methods promote active engagement with content and the development of knowledge. Hence, they can contribute to more effective learning outcomes. Here are some key principles to consider when planning a lecture. (See figure below for more information.) Listed below are some of the important aspects of effective teaching. The following points will help you choose the best teaching method.
The most effective teachers vary their methods and encourage their students to give their best efforts. These teachers use the three Ds of teaching to help their students succeed. First, they start with the big picture, providing context before delivering specific details. Next, they give clear deadlines and directions. By doing so, they create motivation and eliminate confusion. Ineffective teachers also provide unclear and incomplete instructional materials, which make learning more difficult and lead to poor outcomes. Hence, learning objectives must be clearly defined before beginning teaching.
Another important principle of teaching is that it empowers individuals to learn for themselves. This includes encouraging individuals to read, study, and apply knowledge for themselves. Secondly, it involves being attentive to individuals’ needs and making specific interventions in their lives. Learning is an ongoing process. Teaching involves balancing the interests and needs of individuals and groups. Teaching, therefore, is a lifetime journey. And despite its unique nature, it cannot be summed up in a textbook.
